Where else can you go from powder turns, spectacular mountain vistas, bluebird skies and fresh mountain air to high street retail therapy, a sushi dinner and vibrant city nightlife in 25 minutes? Nowhere.
Eldora Mountain Resort is the closest ski area to Colorado’s front range urban areas. The Eldora Ski Resort is a modest 680 skiable acres that doesn’t necessarily evoke stat sheet amazement but this ski area checks a lot of boxes. From the dedicated Little Hawk beginner and family zone to intermediate cruisers on Challenge Mountain to the steep pitch and renowned glade skiing of Corona bowl, Eldora ski resort accomplishes a lot in a relatively small space.
ELDORA SKI RESORT EXPLAINED
The base area is compact, relaxed and friendly with a ton of free, slope-side parking. There’s a nice vibe here that is Nederland local (grungy and groovy) meets Boulder outdoor enthusiast. There’s a rich ski racing heritage at the Eldora ski resort. You’ll often see ski clubs piling out of their team minibus to practice their rhythm through the slalom gates. Head up to the Corona Bar after the lifts close on a Wednesday evening for a post ski libation and take your Dutch courage back to the slopes a half hour later for the “drop in” floodlight race series. It’s about time someone put the local Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller wannabe’s in their place.
WHAT ELSE IS CLOSE TO ELDORA SKI RESORT?
20 scenic canyon miles down highway 119 lies the town of Boulder. Winter sports aside, this town is bucket list destination in its own right. Home to an eclectic mix of techy entrepreneurs, party hard students, elite athletes, hipsters and hippies that came in the 70’s and never left, Boulder offers a host of experiences not normally associated with a ski vacation! Catch a show, visit a museum, take in a band, visit a seemingly endless list of craft breweries and sample the culinary delights that give Boulder the title of “America’s foodiest town”.
This “ski & city” theme makes for a perfect early season getaway. Sneak in some bona-fide tune up turns whilst trading the annual holiday shopping headache for a festive treat. The Eldora ski resort (incredibly) covers 100% of it’s groomed terrain with snowmaking, a unique claim in Colorado and a guaranteed snow-sure start to ski season. Downtown, you can finish up your gift getting amongst the twinkling lights of Pearl Street Mall and slip into a Bistro for some celebratory mulled wine mixology!
ELDORA SKI LODGING GEM
The “go to” accommodation for an Eldora ski trip has to be the Boulder Adventure Lodge. Local adventurers Asa Firestone & Kris Klauber acquired the property in late 2014 and have thrown themselves into a project to realize this property’s incredible potential.
Their plan is turn to the lodge into a base camp for year round round adventure. They’ve already re-branded, re-named (it used to be the Boulder Mountain Lodge), completed a room renovation and added a free ski shuttle to deliver you to the skiing and riding at Eldora. Next on the checklist is a community room and saloon which will serve as breakfast room, front desk & a gathering place to grab a beer, listen to music and socialize after the lifts have stopped spinning.
Nestled in pristine Four Mile Canyon, you can slide into the soothing bubbles of the lodges hot tub and relax to the echo of trickling water from nearby Four Mile Creek. Although it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere you’re actually just a 5 minute car ride from the bright lights of Boulder.
