ENJOY WINTER DELIGHTS AT WOLF CREEK LODGE

IMGP0603Wolf Creek Ski Resort is a family owned and operated resort that just celebrated its 75th anniversary. Lovingly tended since its opening in 1941, Wolf Creek Lodge offers guests all the delights of winter, from skiing adventures to opportunities to stay warm and cozy indoors. No matter what you enjoy doing, Wolf Creek Lodge has something you’ll like.

NO-FRILLS SKIING

Wolf Creek gets the most snow of any ski resort in Colorado – 36 feet each year. The Wolf Creek ski area is perfect not only for skiing, but snowboarding, snow tubing, and other winter sports as well. In fact, the light, dry snow here is so famous that when the storm clouds gather, residents drop what they’re doing for some quality winter sport time.

Wolf Creek is a family-friendly resort with trails for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers. The kids’ ski school program is one of the best and most popular in Colorado. Wolf Creek’s goal is to show guests “how skiing used to be” and treat them to a laid-back, fun skiing vacation. Their 10 kilometers of cross-country trails are always well-groomed and ready for any winter athlete.

All that skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing usually makes guests hungry, so they are eager to find warm, hearty fare. There is no village inside Wolf Creek’s boundaries, but the Wolf Creek Lodge itself serves up a variety of great foods. Their soups and red chili are perfect for frigid winter evenings, as is their Santa Fe style green chili. The lodge also offers a full-service gourmet salad bar.

Outside Wolf Creek Lodge, several nearby bars and grills do plenty of business during the winter. These include the Pathfinder and Pagosa Bars, as well as the River Sports Bar & Grill and the Bear Creek Saloon. Wolf Creek’s bars are known for their locally brewed beers and variety of mixed drinks. The Pathfinder Bar serves up several types of hot wine.

ROMANTIC ACTIVITIES

With Valentine’s Day approaching, you might wonder how to make the day unique for your significant other. Wolf Creek is happy to help. Along with the regular docket of winter sports, nearby Pagosa Springs offers hot air balloon and sleigh rides. Additionally, dog sledding and ice skating are available. Top off your romantic dinner at the Raven’s Nest at the top of the Raven Lift, Ramon’s, or The Old Firehouse.

The First Street Pub and Grill and the Very Nice Brewing Co. in Nederland are two popular spots for those on their first pub crawl. Once you’ve enjoyed those, move on to the Pioneer Inn. The staff there specializes in quality Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and rock and roll bands entertain guests every night. Every genre of rock is represented, from classics and oldies to heavy metal. Ask the staff for an entertainment schedule.

If beer is not your favorite drink, Eldora’s pubs and bars have plenty of other options. One of their most unique is the “Meadery,” which specializes in honey wine. Its bars also serve several popular drinks including wines, mixed drinks, and nonalcoholic beverages.

skier-durango-mountain-resort-colorado_64706_600x450Don’t let Purgatory’s name fool you – it’s a friendly, lively Colorado ski resort. Nestled in the mountains of Southwestern Colorado, Purgatory Ski Resort has a plethora of trails with tough terrain that challenges the most experienced skiers. In fact, the vertical makes Purgatory one of our favorite resorts.

However, you don’t have to stay at the Purgatory Resort, or even ski much, to have fun there. If you’re a beginner skier or just want to experience resort life, Purgatory offers several other fun activities and unique locales.

ENJOY NATURE

Take off your skis and go for a walk or hike around nearby Mesa Verde National Park. Conveniently located 35 minutes from Durango, it’s home to 1400-year-old cliff dwellings you won’t find anywhere else. Nat Geo calls them “the visit of a lifetime.”

When you’re ready for a tougher athletic challenge, try one of Purgatory’s many tubing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing tours. These include the San Juan Untracked tour, which boasts 35,000 skiable acres. It’s also home to a large cat skiing operation. If you’ve never been cat skiing, it involves using a ski hill grooming machine rather than regular skis to transport you on hills and trails. Cat skiing can accommodate up to 12 ski guests per machine.

VRBO_poolTRY SOME UNIQUE FOOD

Dining in Purgatory is somewhat limited compared to other locations, but it still has several great choices. Purgy’s, a modern American diner, is a favorite among most guests, as is The Paradise Pizzeria. The Village Market and Deli is a popular stop for breakfast and lunch, as is the Bear Bar & Grille.

Of course, if you’re staying in Purgatory for several days, you may want to increase the scope of your dining experience. Durango has more restaurants per capita than San Francisco, so you have a plethora of options. The Carver Brewing Company is one of its top eateries, with delicious options such as lemon pasta, Navajo tacos, and homemade pie of the day.

VISIT A RAILROAD MUSEUM

The Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum gives tourists a great look at Colorado’s proud railroad history. The scenery is gorgeous, and you can take a scenic train ride (both open and enclosed cars are available). Canyons and narrow ledges make the rides adventurous, but don’t worry – you and your family will be safe the entire time. Several visitors’ packages are available, including adventure packages and regular tour packages for events like the Historic Silverton Mining Tour. Consider taking your spouse or significant other for a ride on the Romance on the Rails Brunch Train.
